Bijoy Jain & Studio Mumbai

Bijoy Jain’s Studio Mumbai redefines architecture as a collaborative act of making. The studio operates as a collective—carpenters, masons, and blacksmiths—who create through hands-on experimentation with locally sourced stone, silk, bamboo, and reclaimed wood. Jain’s innovative use of silk and repurposed Indian Army parachutes reflects his philosophy of merging traditional materials with utilitarian elements to create both poetic and functional designs.

For Jain, furniture transcends utility to become a “vessel for ritual,” shaping how we gather, sit, or pause. Inspired by traditional Indian forms like the peeda stool, his low-slung pieces encourage grounded, contemplative postures. Each design is crafted through slow, deliberate making by the same artisans who work on Studio Mumbai’s structures, blurring the line between object and space to serve as micro-architectures that shape how we inhabit rooms.

Jain’s work insists that architecture must honor the hands that shape it—not as nostalgia, but as an essential language of belonging. In an era of mass production, Studio Mumbai stands as a testament to the enduring power of handmade, human-centered design, where materiality, light, and human touch converge to create spaces deeply rooted in their cultural and environmental context.

Jain’s designs have been exhibited at the Fondation Cartier, Paris, Venice Biennale, Victoria & Albert Museum and included in the permanent collections at Centre Pompidou, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art design collection. His presence in institutions like the MET and Fondation Cartier underscores global recognition of his “slow design” ethos.

Jain's works are exhibited as part of Alev Ebüzziya Siesbye: Vibrations.
