Duyi Han

Duyi Han (b. 1994) is a Chinese artist based in Shanghai. He studied architecture at Cornell University in New York and worked at Herzog & de Meuron in Basel. Focusing on design, Han describes the objects and environments he creates as “neuro-aesthetic prescriptions” engaging diverse temporal and cultural landscapes.

Duyi Han’s interest in visual history and culture centers around the evolution and mutation of aesthetics and form in relation to human emotion, zeitgeist, and the mechanisms of the universe. Influenced by Eastern Philosophy and the contemporary Pharmaceutical Industry, Han describes the ethos of his work as formless in nature, but that the work manifests through a process of “prescribing” visual and material content to question what a remedy for the universal condition of the human mind and societal values would appear as.

Oscillating in the realm between art and design, Duyi Han’s practice blends sculpture, furniture, scenography, and digital art. His work engages with themes of mental health and contemporary belief systems. Han’s strong interest in textile objects lies in the under-explored soft elements of traditional East Asian architecture. Paired with a major force of contemporary visual culture; fashion. He treats textile objects as cultural artifacts, recording values which express emotions and symbolism of societies.
