Bijoy Jain
Biography
Bijoy Jain (b. 1965, Mumbai) is an architect whose practice moves fluidly between art, architecture, and material culture. After earning his Master of Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis, Jain worked in Los Angeles and London before returning to India in 1995 to found Studio Mumbai. The studio functions as an interdisciplinary collective of architects, engineers, artisans, and craftspeople, with a deep commitment to process, place, and the elemental forces of water, air, and light. Emphasizing collaboration and material intimacy, Studio
Mumbai’s work is grounded in the rhythms of nature and the human experience. Jain’s projects have received international recognition, including the Global Award in Sustainable Architecture, the Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award (Finland), and the Grande Médaille d’Or from the Académie d’Architecture (Paris). In 2010, the studio was awarded a Special Mention at the Venice Architecture Biennale for Work-Place, a full-scale installation of their studio and workshop environment.
In 2023, Jain presented Breath of an Architect at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, also featuring the stoneware bowls of Alev Ebüzziya Siesbye—a poetic and monumental installation composed of handmade objects, architectural structures, and furnishings. The exhibition invited visitors into a world shaped by silence, voids, and natural materials, revealing Jain’s ongoing exploration of space as a living, breathing organism.
