Young Sook Park
우리집 거실
Salon 94 Design is honored to present 우리집 거실, Young Sook Park’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Roughly translated to My Living Room, 우리집 거실 offers an intimate peek into Park’s profoundly personal and culturally rich practice in traditional Korean porcelain.
Born in 1947, Park was raised in Gyeongju, once the capital of the ancient Silla Dynasty. This famed artistic enclave informed and inspired her dedication to mastering the art of traditional Korean pottery-making. Park spent her childhood among an eighth-century Bulguska Buddhist temple surrounded by historical art and artifacts. Exploring the surrounding history, she began collecting antiquities from a young age, later attributing her skill for ratio and proportion in her ceramics to this distinctive environment.
Renowned worldwide for her technical abilities, versatility and precision, Park is recognized for her dedication to capturing the long-lost artistic traditions of Korea. In reviving the former methods of the Joseon potters, she demonstrates her patience and mastery of the form and material – achieving nearly impossible feats of scale and perfection.
Though devoted to tradition, Park employs traditional methods together with her own techniques to create a modern evocation of the moon jar. She has engaged in artistic collaborations ranging from the diamond encrusted jars made in collaboration with Charlie de Viel Castel of CVC Stones and famously with her longtime friend and inspiration, Korean painter and sculptor Lee Ufan, of which the gallery is proud to present 3 stunning painted porcelain examples.
